We all wish we knew someone who could show up at a moment’s notice and know what to do and go wherever they were sent.
Need a hand? I know a guy!
If you need help around your house, then maybe you can get a neighbor to do it. But sometimes the job might be too big for the neighbor with questionable skills—even though his heart is in the right place.
Maybe you just don’t want to take any chances and you just want it done right. That’s when you ask around for recommendations and your friends tell you, “I know a guy.” After trusting their recommendation, you were glad you did. Your headache is now gone and the job is done.
THE CHURCH IS GOD’S HOUSE. There are so many moving parts that make it work. The church has so many volunteers that can step in and do things—AMAZING things—with unpredictable results. God put it on the Christian heart to do service for their neighbor and to love one another. Sometimes you need experienced labor that leads to quality results due to professional training. You need someone who knows what they’re doing and makes the job look easy because they practiced really hard before they ever showed up.
As people who serve the church, a lot of times people think it’s synonymous with volunteering. The unspoken secret is that VOLUNTEERS ARE UNRELIABLE, UNTRAINED, AND UNEXPERIENCED. You usually have one or two paid staffers in charge of a dozen volunteers. Some have been vetted with background checks or one-on-one interviews, others just showed up and you have no idea what their qualifications are.
What’s the key to Chaplaincy Services?
CHAPLAINS realize that it’s always sunny above the clouds, even on a rainy day—because God is in charge and His light is always shining bright!
In the same way that some people can cast a shadow over everything, chaplains can shine light over everything like a beacon in the night. John 3:21 says whoever does what is true comes to the light. Chaplains are doing what is true because we have embraced that Jesus is the truth. The second part of 3:21 points out that through this light, our Godly works will be clearly seen.
Chaplains let others see very clearly the things we do. If it is truly God's work, then everyone will know that what we have done is very good.
Read the Book
The English Standard Version is what I like to read. But I started with the Message Bible, which is a heavily paraphrased and easy-to-understand Bible for normal people who are not scholars. Read it DAILY as a habit. Make it the first thing you do after waking up. Once you READ the Word of God, take time to REFLECT (John 8:32) so you can discover the truth of what you just read. Decide for yourself if you believe it, then take time to PRAY. Psalm 66:19
Serve Others
When you read the Bible by yourself, secluded in some private closet away from all people, then you missed the whole point. READ THE BIBLE. REFLECT on what you have read. PRAY by talking to God and giving thanks. Now, it is time to SERVE OTHERS (Galatians 5:13-14) through selfless good works. Jesus Christ was a servant, and we are called to be reflections of Christ. Find Godly work to do and dive in with service.
Fellowship
After you READ THE BIBLE, REFLECT on its truth, PRAY by talking to God, and then SERVE OTHERS selflessly—you might end up having FELLOWSHIP with like-minded individuals such as yourself. Meaning, you might become friends with other Christians that can help keep you on-track and on-point—so we don’t misrepresent who Jesus is. Do life together by being accountable. That’s what it means when Iron sharpens Iron. Proverbs 27:17
